With the increasing technological advancement and rise in social media, one can travel the world in a day or simply see his feed or posts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or WhatsApp reach across the sea in no time. To either estimate association/disassociation or similarities/dissimilarities, we tend to use adjectives from our vocabulary bank of words. Have we felt the emotion/feeling that comes along with evaluation? Is it healthy? Are we driven by other people? Though there is positive/healthy competition, there is also a danger of comparing ourselves often with others. Unknowingly we may invite self-destruction. In an era where social media is the king or the queen dominating one’s potential or personality, somewhere we have lost our innate own self.
Talking to a cousin few days ago, she mentioned about her hectic lifestyle, social life and social media and the associated stress that goes with it. She wondered how I kept myself grounded and away from the hullabaloo of things happening around me. Well, I am active on social media and active in the society as well. I undergo stress too. It is the mindset and perspective that needs changing. It is all about priorities. The day I feel I need to be more active on social media, I will be. But that does not mean I spend my energies on it right now.
Comparisons between you and another is a good recipe for tension, unhealthy competition and unhappiness. The only game one can win is being himself. Be what you are. No sooner you realize that your focus is on not on others but your own self, you will be free from the shackles of false comparison and evolve.
Social media acceptance has become an integral part of todays young and old. By the time we recognize that social media is nothing but a highlight of the movie reel of a real person’s life, we have already jumped into a swamp of mess within. While the grass seems greener on the other side, we have no idea of what they are going through. In perfection, lies the imperfect. The superficial flawless “online version” of others and yourself will leave you feeling bad about your own self.
