Most of us may be using self-talk and chatter to organize ourselves, focus or remember things. There may be a few who might not have this monologue at all as they might see it through their visual senses. So, there are people with different sensory representations and different sub modalities. To articulate the way, we think and what our thoughts are requires a lot of digging into our sub-conscious. While some may not chatter with themselves, they have their own way to get things done or remember. But what we all possess in common is the “inner voice,”. It is the voice inside our head, an internal dialogue happens all the time. And therefore, each of us respond differently to our little voice. It is a result of certain brain mechanisms that may tell you to talk to yourself without being verbal.
The origination of our inner voice generally comes from our childhood experiences that are internalized, how we may have reacted or responded and the self-image we hold for ourselves. Many times, our primary care takers tend to blurt out negative words as a part of their innate nature. The images that we form in our head during that period influences how we grow up. Later, our communication and interaction with other people, friends, siblings, family are influential factors towards our inner thoughts. For some, this self-talk could be a part of their daily routine and for some, it may be overly complicated.
Let us pause and tap on what we were thinking 5 seconds back or one minute back? Do you know that our brain can think approximately 90,000 words in a day? If you interrogate within and find out, that you were speaking the words to yourself that you read somewhere or visualised in a picture or simply having an emotional talk. It could be a combination. Whatever those thoughts were, it is likely that you remembered some and forgot the rest.
Why not take this inner chatter positively? It is a way to communicate with yourself in a meaningful manner. It is the star that shines alone in a dark sky. Learning how to tune our thoughts at an individual level will help us to be aware and conscious. Our inner voice acts like our guide. It helps us make decisions. Call it as that ‘gut feeling’ or ‘intuition’, it is the inner voice that is powerful.
